Install crosswalks on Barbour Lane intersections

The Issue

Every day, I risk my life crossing the intersections of Ashleywoods Drive and Barbour Lane and Barbour Manor Drive and Barbour Lane. Without crosswalks or pedestrian signs, it feels like I'm taking a leap of faith each time I need to cross the road. This issue stands as a daily reminder of how the safety of pedestrians is being overlooked.

Barbour Lane, a crucial thoroughfare in our community, experiences heavy traffic flow, including vehicles that speed down the hill and through the intersections without slowing down. The lack of pedestrian infrastructure poses a serious risk not only to me but also to all residents who rely on walking as a mode of transport.

Numerous studies have shown how implementing even basic pedestrian crossings can reduce accidents significantly. According to the Federal Highway Administration, installing marked crosswalks in all crossing scenarios where pedestrian signs and treatments are absent can enhance pedestrian safety by over 60%.

Imagine the peace of mind we would have if crosswalks were established on Barbour Lane. Parents could safely walk their children to school, seniors could take their daily walks without fear of a speeding car, and overall, our community could foster a healthier lifestyle by encouraging more people to walk.

I'm urging the local council to take immediate action by installing crosswalks and adequate pedestrian signage at Barbour Lane intersections. Such simple steps, as you can find in other Louisville and surrounding suburbs, can prevent potential accidents and save lives. You have probably seen these simple bollards in the center of some busy roads and crosswalks clearly painted on the pavement.

Please join me in advocating for pedestrian safety by signing this petition. Together, we can bring about a safer environment for everyone in our community.
