Install communication boards at Bishop Park

Install communication boards at Bishop Park
The Issue
Everyone Can Play Project!
As an RBT working in a community with individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities. I am passionate about supporting individuals, especially children, in developing functional communication skills that promote meaningful participation, independence, and inclusion within their community parks and recreational environments. As a community member deeply rooted in the Wyandotte and Downriver area, I've witnessed the impact of inclusive environments and the sense of belonging they foster.
Bishop Park is a vital recreational area where countless families and children gather to relax, play, and enjoy nature. It stands as a central location that could exemplify inclusivity by implementing communication boards, which would specifically support children who are nonverbal or have limited speech. These boards serve as a bridge to expression and understanding, allowing every child the opportunity to not only engage but also to be truly heard and active participants in their community.
Communication boards have been successfully implemented in parks and public spaces worldwide, breaking communication barriers and allowing children to convey their needs, desires, thoughts, and feelings. In communities like ours where programs and schools for individuals with autism and other communication needs are present, these boards would significantly complement existing resources, enhancing the quality of life for many children and their families. They provide visual cues that are essential for those who rely on nonverbal communication, enabling greater interaction and understanding among peers and families.
An inclusive Bishop Park would not only benefit the children and families it serves directly but would also set a precedent in the Downriver area, serving as a model for others to follow suit. By fostering an environment where every child has a voice, we strengthen our community's values in diversity, inclusion, and understanding.
I am calling on the local government and park authorities to collaborate with experts in communication tools and special education to install these communication boards. Let's create a transformative space where everyone feels welcome, empowered, and included. Sign this petition to help make Bishop Park a beacon of inclusivity for all children and their families!
