Install cameras in all special needs schools classroom, nursing homes, respite
The Issue
My 6-year-old grand nephew, who has autism and was non verbal, along with five other children, were assaulted by a teacher. Only due to the presence of cameras was there indisputable evidence of her crime, leading to her conviction. Without this evidence, it would have been a matter of her word against that of a non-verbal child. If you want to read more go to his mothers (my niece) Facebook profile and read her family impact statement her name is "marie loughman"
This heart-wrenching incident highlights a critical gap in protecting our vulnerable children in special needs schools. Installing cameras in all classrooms would serve as a deterrent to potential abusers and provide a sense of safety for both students and their families. It would ensure transparency and accountability in the educational environment tailored for children who are often unable to advocate for themselves.
Statistics show that children with disabilities are 3.4 times more likely to face abuse than their non-disabled peers, according to the National Children's Advocacy Center. By making surveillance cameras compulsory in special needs schools, we can work to reduce these troubling statistics, holding those who abuse their position accountable.
Implementing this measure requires cooperation from education authorities, school boards, and parents. It can start as a pilot program in select schools and gradually expand, ensuring the privacy of students while prioritizing their wellbeing.
