The Issue

Growing up and well into adulthood, beach volleyball was a pivotal part of my life, offering me not only physical fitness but also mental resilience, and a deeper sense of teamwork. It's even how I met my wonderful husband! Having played and coached this dynamic sport, it deeply saddens me that in the beautiful city of Morro Bay, there isn't a public beach volleyball court within a 25-mile radius. I am passionate about the sport and want to share it with my daughter, but without local facilities, we are deprived of the opportunity to learn and play together.

Beach volleyball isn't just a game; it's an engaging sport that brings communities together, fostering friendships and strengthening social bonds. The joy of feeling the sand beneath your feet as you dive for a ball is unmatched or getting the perfect shot as you watch the ocean waves crash. Being able to witness a community come alive through such a healthy activity is immensely rewarding. The absence of courts here is not merely a loss for individual enthusiasts but for the spirit of community sportsmanship as a whole.

According to the American Volleyball Coaches Association, beach volleyball is one of the fastest-growing high school sports in the U.S., seeing a rise in participation by over 35% in the past five years. Additionally, studies suggest that such community sports facilities can significantly increase local tourism, drawing visitors who relish in both playing and watching the sport. Cities like Santa Barbara and Huntington Beach have successfully integrated beach volleyball courts, seeing positive impacts on both community health and local businesses.

Imagine Morro Bay becoming a small hub for beach volleyball, where children, teens, and adults all gather to enjoy the vibrancy of the sport. Imagine annual local tournaments, school leagues, and regional events that could boost our economy and our community spirit.

To achieve this vision, I am calling on the City Council of Morro Bay to allocate resources and space to install at least two beach volleyball courts.
Please join me in advocating for the installation of two beach volleyball courts by signing this petition. Together, we can pave the way for young and old generations to enjoy the beauty and benefits of beach volleyball right here in Morro Bay.
