The Issue

“I’m Isobel, and I am 9 years old. I would like to have a zebra crossing at the bottom of Mary Vale Road (junction with Pershore Road). This is because when I am crossing the road to and from Stirchley Primary School it is very tricky because of all the cars - there are lots parked, and lots turning on and off the main road. It is very busy and as I am only a child they can’t see me. I find it scary and dangerous.”— Isobel, age 9

Mary Vale Road (Stirchley, Birmingham), particularly at its junction with Pershore Road, has become increasingly hazardous to pedestrians, especially to young children making their way to and from Stirchley Primary School and to Bournville train station. With the constant flow of traffic, including both turning vehicles and those parked along the roadside, individuals, particularly children, find it extremely challenging and dangerous to navigate their way across.

The lack of a safe pedestrian crossing is an issue that puts everyone, especially children, at risk. The sheer volume of the traffic significantly diminishes visibility, and many drivers are distracted by the tricky vehicle logistics (single lane traffic, traffic lights on bridge, HGVs) of pedestrians attempting to cross.

Zebra crossings have been proven time and time again to reduce accidents and facilitate safer pedestrian pathways. According to studies, zebra crossings decrease the number of pedestrian-related accidents by up to 40% in high-traffic areas. Implementing such a crossing would not only prioritize the safety of our children but also ensure a safer community for all pedestrians and help maintain a structured flow of traffic.

By installing a zebra crossing or other safe crossing measure, we are taking proactive steps to safeguard our children and community members. Please sign and share!
