Install a traffic signal at Pu'uloa Rd and Mapunapuna Pl
The Issue
On June 18, 2026, one of our team members was involved in a terrifying motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Puʻuloa Road and Mapunapuna Place in Honolulu. Thankfully, our team member survived the accident, but this incident highlights a major safety concern that affects not only my workplace but also the many residents, employees, commuters, and pedestrians who travel through this intersection every day.
This recent collision is not an isolated event. On May 7, 2026, a major crash at the same intersection resulted in an overturned vehicle and injuries requiring hospitalization, drawing attention from local news outlets.
Puʻuloa Road is a busy highway carrying substantial traffic volumes, while Mapunapuna Place provides access to numerous businesses and workplaces. The intersection has marked pedestrian crosswalks but lacks pedestrian crossing signals and a traffic signal to regulate vehicle movements. Pedestrians are required to judge gaps in traffic when crossing, and drivers making left turns must navigate oncoming traffic without the protection of a dedicated signal phase.
The combination of high traffic volumes, vehicle speeds, pedestrian activity, and unprotected turning movements creates stressful and dangerous conditions that increase the risk of collisions and pedestrian injuries. Transportation research has consistently shown that properly designed and warranted traffic signals can improve intersection safety by regulating conflicting traffic movements, providing designated crossing opportunities for pedestrians, and reducing the likelihood of severe angle crashes.
We respectfully urge the Hawaii Department of Transportation, the City and County of Honolulu, the Honolulu City Council, and all relevant agencies to conduct a formal safety review of the intersection of Puʻuloa Road and Mapunapuna Place and prioritize the installation of a traffic signal or other appropriate traffic-control measures.
By addressing these safety concerns now, we can help prevent future crashes, reduce injuries, and make this intersection safer for everyone who relies on it.
Please sign this petition to support improved traffic safety at the intersection of Puʻuloa Road and Mapunapuna Place and encourage our local leaders to take meaningful action before another preventable tragedy occurs.
