Update on Traffic Signal at Grant & Babcock Intersection

Hi neighbors,

I wanted to share an update on the effort to improve safety at the intersection of Babcock St, Grant Rd, and Eldron Blvd. As many of you know, I started a petition and have been in contact with local and state officials about the need for a traffic signal at this intersection.

Here’s the latest from the County, based on an email from Danielle Stern (Chief of Staff to Commissioner Thad Altman) and Corrina Gumm (Assistant Public Works Director):

Traffic Signal Study Underway: Brevard County is initiating an engineering analysis (signal warrant study) at this intersection. This is being made possible thanks to a recent commitment from the City of Palm Bay to help fund the design and construction. The signal warrant study is expected to be completed by July 2025.
Possible Interim Measures: The County is considering flashing beacons as a short-term safety improvement. However, a temporary 4-way stop isn’t seen as safe due to the speed and volume of traffic on Babcock.
Funding Challenges: Although Babcock is a County-maintained road, the traffic at this intersection is largely driven by nearby development in Palm Bay and Grant Valkaria. The County has limited funds, so they’ve been urging the City to take the lead—something that finally seems to be happening.

This is progress, but we’re not done yet. I’ll continue to follow up and advocate for a safe, permanent solution. Thank you to everyone who signed the petition and voiced your concerns—your voices are being heard.

Please feel free to message me with any questions or if you’d like to get involved.
