Install a traffic light at dangerous intersection: Bay St and Meder St
The Issue
I witnessed a horrific accident at the intersection near Bay St and Meder St just past the UCSC campus main entrance on Jan 30th. A motorcyclist and a car collided and the motorcyclist, a 20 yr old UCSC student, sustained severely life threatening injuries. I live on Meder and Bay, and I believe that my concern is not a singular one, but that there are many who use this intersection and too feel that something should happen to address it urgently.
Currently, the intersection lacks sufficient traffic control measures, making it immensely dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. With numerous cars rushing through daily, this intersection is a death trap in several ways.
Statistics show that the introduction of traffic lights or stop signs drastically reduces the incidence of accidents at busy intersections. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, implementing proper traffic control can reduce intersection crashes by up to 46%.
To protect the people in our residential community, the UCSC students, faculty, staff, the furry residents, the bikers and anyone else who uses that road, we urgently need to install a stop light at this critical point. By doing so, we can regulate traffic flow and, more importantly, ensure the safety and well-being of all who traverse this area.
We urge the city council and traffic department to assess and act upon this urgent need for infrastructure improvements. We have to and can prevent any more accidents from occurring at this intersection which is know for its lack of safety signals, poor visibility, and high-speed traffic. Let's not wait for another serious accident to happen before acknowledging the risks and taking proactive measures.
Please join me in signing this petition to ensure that our voices are heard, and that the safety of everyone in our community is prioritized. This could save lives. Sign the petition today to make Bay and Meder safer for everyone.
