The Issue
From a young age, I have been deeply fascinated by the history of our local area, Kingstanding. It was in these streets that I grew up, always filled with tales of the past and the significance of our locale. The absence of a statue of King Charles I has always puzzled me, especially considering the iconic story behind our community's name.
Kingstanding derives its name from an intriguing moment in history involving King Charles I. Legend has it that during the English Civil War in 1642, King Charles stood in this location, presumably overlooking the area, hence the name "Kingstanding". This vital piece of heritage not only adds character to our community but also connects us to our country's rich historical tapestry.
Yet, despite this historical significance, there is no monument or statue to commemorate King Charles I’s link to our area. Installing a statue would not only honour this history but also serve as an educational focal point for both locals and visitors. It would instil a sense of pride and identity, reminding everyone of the storied past we inherit and preserve.
Our neighbouring communities have excelled in celebrating their heritage with statues and memorials that both educate and inspire future generations. Why should Kingstanding be any different? By erecting a statue of King Charles I, we acknowledge a pivotal moment in our past and embrace an opportunity to enrich our community culture.
Let us come together to celebrate our history by establishing a lasting tribute that will stand the test of time right here on Kingstanding Circle. A statue of King Charles I would not only elevate the aesthetic appeal of our area but also support local tourism, drawing history enthusiasts and providing a meaningful landmark for educational programmes.
Join me in appealing to the local council and heritage authorities to approve and oversee the installation of King Charles I’s statue. Together, we can ensure that the legacy of King Charles I remains alive and respected, carving a permanent place for him in the heart of Kingstanding.
Please sign this petition and help us honour our history by celebrating a monarch whose presence gave our beloved community its name.
