Install a Speed Bump on E Alvord St

Install a Speed Bump on E Alvord St
The Issue
I have lived on E Alvord St in Springfield, MA for over 30 years. Growing up, I spent countless hours as a child riding my bike, playing ball, and hopscotch along the sidewalks. Our street was a haven for childhood exploration and fun; however, what I see today concerns me deeply. The children now playing in this neighborhood—a future generation full of hope and dreams— are at risk. Their innocent play is overshadowed by the fear of reckless drivers, particularly dirtbikes, speeding down our residential street at highway speeds.
The speed limit on E Alvord St is 30 MPH, but it's disturbingly common to witness vehicles, especially dirtbikes, carelessly racing by at double that speed. It's only a matter of time before a tragic accident occurs. Children are not aware of the dangers posed by such high-speed vehicles, and when they chase after a bouncing ball into the street, their lives are endangered. I've seen too many close calls and heard heart-wrenching stories from neighboring streets about children losing their lives because of speeding vehicles.
To address this urgent safety issue, we petition for the installation of a speed bump on E Alvord St. Speed bumps have proven effective in reducing traffic speed and offering a safer environment for pedestrians, especially in residential areas. By implementing this, we can protect our children and ensure that the neighborhood remains a safe place for play and community activities.
The dangers are too real, and the stakes are too high to ignore. Every day, residents back out of their driveways, often sight-impaired by parked cars lining both sides. A speeding dirtbike or car could result in a fatal accident that could have been easily prevented.
We urge local authorities, the City of Springfield, and neighborhood associations to take immediate action. Installing a speed bump is a small, yet significant step towards safeguarding our community and creating a safer environment for our children to thrive. Help us make this change by signing this petition. Together, we can ensure safety and peace of mind for all residents on E Alvord St.
