The Issue

As a parent deeply concerned for the safety of my children and others in our community, I urge the City of Newark to take immediate action to address the hazardous speeding on Springfield Avenue. Our neighborhood has witnessed far too many close calls and actual accidents due to reckless driving. The safety of our children, who often walk through this area on their way to and from school, is at stake.

14th Avenue is a bustling street with heavy foot traffic, especially during school hours. Despite the clear presence of pedestrians, many drivers continue to speed through, putting lives at risk. Statistics show that areas with speed bumps experience significantly fewer accidents. According to the Institute of Transportation Engineers, speed humps can reduce traffic speeds by as much as 40%, which could drastically improve safety in our area.

Moreover, numerous studies have shown that traffic calming measures, like speed bumps, not only slow down vehicles but also make drivers more aware of pedestrians. The installation of a speed bump would serve as a physical reminder for drivers to reduce their speed, providing parents with peace of mind knowing their children can travel safely in their own neighborhood.

As residents, we've appealed to the city council for months, hoping they would prioritize the safety of our families. Despite our efforts and documented incidents involving speeding on this block, we have yet to see concrete action from the city. The lack of response puts residents, especially our children, at continuous risk.

We propose that the City of Newark immediately reviews the traffic conditions on 14th Avenue and implements solutions, such as speed bumps, to protect our community. Let us not wait for a tragedy to happen before taking action. Together, let's prioritize safety and make Springfield Avenue a safer place for everyone.

Sign this petition to demand that the City of Newark installs a speed bump on 14th  Avenue to effectively reduce speeding and safeguard our children and fellow pedestrians. Your signature could be crucial in making our neighborhood safer for everyone.
