Install a signal at Triana Boulevard crosswalk
The Issue
I’ve had a near-miss with cars that refuse to stop on multiple occasions. I dread what might happen every time I step onto the crosswalk in front of Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater and University Pickers on Triana Boulevard in Huntsville, Alabama. The drivers barely slow down, and on one terrifying occasion, I saw an accident occur feet away from me because someone did stopped for me as I tried to cross, but the car behind them did not. This has not only affected me, but multiple children, parents, and volunteers who are just trying to cross the street at a designated crosswalk. The City of Huntsville needs to put its pedestrians’ safety first.
The crosswalk in question is on Triana Boulevard, a busy street where cars often speed, frequented by families and children heading to the theater for performances and classes. It lacks a proper signal that would force vehicles to stop when pedestrians cross. Without it, the safety of the people who use that walkway each year is risked. It’s not just an oversight, but a potential tragedy waiting to happen.
Nationwide, a pedestrian was killed every 74 minutes in 2024. Statistics show that pedestrian crosswalks equipped with traffic signals reduce accidents by up to 70%. Imagine the peace of mind knowing our loved ones can cross safely to engage in cultural and educational activities at Fantasy Playhouse. Putting up a signal light here is necessary for the continued safety of our community.
Our city officials must recognize the dangers of the situation. Installing a traffic light here would not just slow down traffic; it signals that our city values the lives and safety of its people, especially its children.
Join me in urging the Huntsville City Council and the Department of Public Works to take immediate action. Sign this petition and let’s advocate for a safer crosswalk in front of Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater on Triana Boulevard. Let’s protect the community and preserve the joy of being part of events that enrich our lives and give back to our community. It’s time to make a change before it’s too late.
