Install a Sidewalk on our Busy Mount Laurel Street for Improved Safety and Aesthetics
The Issue
As a parent of two young children and a resident of Mount Laurel, I see firsthand the dangers and frustrations caused by the lack of a sidewalk on our street. Every day, fast-moving vehicles speed past, turning what should be simple, enjoyable walks into nerve-wracking experiences. We are a community of walkers, runners, and dog-lovers, yet our neighborhood lacks a basic element of safety that so many take for granted.
Picture this: a calm, carefree stroll with your children or pets, where the only sounds you hear are laughter and the rustling of leaves—not the blaring horn of an impatient driver or the roar of an engine speeding by. For many, this is a daily reality. For us, it remains a dream. Without a sidewalk, our street has become unsafe for everyone, from children waiting for the bus to seniors taking their daily walks.
And then there’s the issue of connection. Our street is bookended by two new Wawas, but accessing them on foot safely is nearly impossible. What should be a quick, enjoyable trip becomes a dangerous venture. The absence of a sidewalk isolates us from these conveniences and reinforces the car-centric design of our neighborhood.
My family often walks to the dance academy at Waverly and Church. It’s just a five-minute trip, but without a sidewalk, it feels much longer—and far riskier. This lack of safe pedestrian access forces us and so many others to drive when we’d much rather walk. It doesn’t have to be this way.
The solution is clear: there is plenty of space to install a sidewalk. Doing so would protect pedestrians, enhance the beauty of our streets, and strengthen our sense of community. A sidewalk would also help address the litter problem caused by fast drivers who thoughtlessly toss trash from their windows. By adding a sidewalk, we can reclaim our neighborhood’s pride and inspire healthier, cleaner living for everyone.
Imagine the impact this simple addition could have: children walking safely to school, neighbors chatting as they stroll, families visiting nearby businesses without fear of speeding traffic. These aren’t just conveniences—they’re the building blocks of a vibrant, connected community. The sidewalk on Church Street has already shown us what’s possible. Now it’s time to bring that same safety and beauty to our street.
Let’s come together and make this vision a reality. Add your voice to the cause. Sign the petition today to help make Mount Laurel a safer, cleaner, and more welcoming place for families, neighbors, and future generations.
