The Issue
Growing up in Fort Collins, the stories of Hispanic and Mexican baseball players who emerged from the beet fields to showcase their talents in the 1920s to 1950s have always filled me with pride and admiration. These players not only entertained but also laid a foundation of cultural richness and diversity that continues to influence our community today. The spirit, dedication, and triumph they displayed, often against overwhelming odds, must never be forgotten.
To honor this significant part of our local history, I propose installing a commemorative art sculpture in City Park. This sculpture will celebrate the contributions of these talented individuals who made a mark in both sports and culture. By doing so, we ensure that their legacy remains a tangible part of Fort Collins and the entire Front Range, a beacon for future generations to learn from and be inspired by.
The Hispanic and Mexican players were known for their incredible prowess on the field, having emerged from the fields of labor with a tenacity that was mirrored in their baseball games. Many of these players left indelible marks, not just in the statistics of the game, but in the hearts of those who watched them play.
Placing an art sculpture in one of Fort Collins' most beloved public spaces can serve as a physical reminder of the struggles and triumphs these players experienced. It's a step towards acknowledging their historical significance and the role they played in shaping our community's identity.
By supporting this initiative, we are taking a concrete step towards preserving the vibrant history of our region. Together, let's champion the creation of this sculpture to celebrate these pioneering athletes and ensure their stories are remembered and respected for years to come.
Please sign this petition to help us bring this important piece of our history to life. Join me in honoring the legacy of these incredible players who exemplified the spirit of perseverance and excellence in Fort Collins.
