Install a safer crossing at Culverstone Green Primary School
The Issue
As a mother of two children who attend Culverstone Green Primary School, I along with many other parents am deeply concerned regarding the safety and effectiveness of the existing crossing outside of the school. Just last week, there was a heart-stopping incident where two reception children narrowly avoided being hit by a speeding car which failed to stop. This incident is far from isolated; there have been numerous near misses at this crossing. Next time we may not be so lucky.
Experts maintain that school zones should have appropriate and proportionate traffic calming measures in place to ensure the safety of all pedestrians. A report by the Department for Transport indicates that such measures can reduce vehicle speeds by over 20%, significantly lowering the risk of accidents.
We urge the council to undertake a comprehensive review of the crossing facility outside Culverstone Green Primary School and to implement improvements that could include installing a safer pedestrian crossing with clearer road markings, signage, traffic lights or speed bumps. These changes are crucial for protecting our children and providing peace of mind to parents, guardians and the wider community.
Every parent, community member, and concerned citizen should not stand idly by as the safety of our young children is compromised. Culverstone Green Primary School sits at the heart of the community, by signing this petition, you are supporting immediate action to safeguard our schoolchildren and enhance our community's wellbeing.
Please join me, the school’s PTA and Headteacher in urging the council to prioritise our children’s safety before an avoidable tradgedy happens.
