The Issue

Our community is urgently in need of improved traffic safety measures near our local high school. The existing flashing light at this critical junction has proven inadequate, as evidenced by a recent tragic accident that resulted in fatalities. It is imperative that we act now to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of our students, parents, and community members.

Numerous studies have shown that fully functional stop lights significantly reduce the likelihood of traffic accidents compared to flashing lights, which are often overlooked or misinterpreted by drivers. According to the Federal Highway Administration, intersections controlled by signal lights see approximately 40% fewer crashes than those that rely on flashing signals alone.

Our high school is situated in a high-traffic area, with hundreds of students entering and leaving the premises daily, alongside buses, parents, and local commuters. The volume of vehicles, coupled with the inattention or impatience of some drivers, turns this area into a hazard zone during peak hours. The safety of our children should be our top priority, and a fully operational stop light is a concrete, achievable improvement that can make a significant difference.

We understand that there may be budgetary and logistical challenges in replacing the flashing light with a traffic signal, but the cost of inaction—measured in human lives—is far greater. In light of our community's needs and the preventable tragedies we have witnessed, we urge the local traffic authorities and city council to take immediate steps in installing a regular stop light at this junction.

By signing this petition, you are joining our call to action to protect our community and keep our roads safe for everyone. Let's ensure no more lives are lost due to preventable traffic accidents. Please sign and share this petition to demand change.
