The Issue

Every school day, parents and residents, are feeling a growing sense of dread when our children cross the road between Willow Wood Community Primary School and English Martyrs Catholic School,  Redcar Road, Sunderland. The safety of our children is at significant risk, as the current zebra crossing simply does not suffice for the level of traffic these two thriving schools generate.

The hectic rush-hour environment results in dangerous situations, with drivers often failing to stop or not noticing pedestrians in time. This inadequate infrastructure has led to several incidents, where children have been knocked over and many more have experienced near misses at the crossing. In fact, local reports and firsthand accounts from parents underline the urgent need for improved road safety measures.

The solution is simple and effective: we need a pelican crossing between the two schools. This type of crossing, regulated by traffic lights, would ensure drivers are compelled to stop, allowing safe passage for our children and providing peace of mind for parents. Pelican crossings have been proven to reduce accidents significantly, offering a safer environment for both students and the general public.

Implementing a pelican crossing will not only enhance the safety of current pedestrians, it will also encourage more children to walk or cycle to school. This, in turn, can ease traffic congestion and promote healthier lifestyles, reflecting positively on the community.

We call on the local council and relevant authorities to prioritize the installation of a pelican crossing at this critical juncture. Our children's lives are priceless, and their safety should never be compromised. Join us in advocating for this necessary change to ensure a safer journey for every child in our community. Please sign this petition and help make a difference in safeguarding our future generations.
