Install a pedestrian refuge at High St and Amherst St, Fremantle

Install a pedestrian refuge at High St and Amherst St, Fremantle
The issue
Crossing High St in Fremantle, especially at the corner of Amherst St, has become a daunting task for pedestrians and cyclists. The increasing traffic load and high vehicle speeds pose a significant risk. This is compounded by the issue of numerous vehicles illegally turning right from the south side of Amherst St, creating further danger.
High St serves as a vital thoroughfare in Fremantle, facilitating both local and commuting traffic. With the growing urban density and the surge in vehicles on our roads, it is crucial that we ensure our streets are safe and accessible for everyone, not just motorists.
The installation of a pedestrian refuge at the intersection of High St and Amherst St is a practical and effective solution. A pedestrian refuge would provide a safe halfway point for those crossing the street, significantly reducing the risk of accidents and making the journey safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
Main Roads WA state that "The frequency of safe crossing opportunities (Safe Gaps) significantly decreases where pedestrians are required to judge gaps in two directions with multiple lanes without a safe refuge (median island). Therefore, it is strongly recommended that pedestrian refuges, or median islands, are provided to reduce the cognitive demand on pedestrians and reduce the crossing lengths in each stage of the crossing." (Guidelines for Pedestrian Crossings, 2026)
Moreover, addressing the illegal right-turning issue with clear signage and stricter enforcement would also contribute to a safer environment for all road users.
Our community deserves streets that are secure and welcoming for everyone. Let's come together to make this possible. We urge the City of Fremantle to prioritise the installation of a pedestrian refuge at this busy intersection.
By signing this petition, you can help ensure a safer, more pedestrian-friendly Fremantle. Let’s make this crucial change for our community's safety and wellbeing.
