Install a pedestrian Pelican crossing at the Lower Coombe Street and High Street Junction
The Issue
About Me
Hi all my name is Marley king and i live by Coombe Road with my young children, They attended the local primary school and we used this crossing everyday. I have set up this petition as i feel walking to school should a safe and enjoyable experience.
Many families are scared to use this crossing as you have to guess when it is safe cross, when u are carrying children or pushing prams this is even more dangerous. Im also concerned that the crossing is not disabled friendly, There is no way from those who are blind or short sighed to cross the road.
The council has a obligation to keep its residents safe, They need to consider the safety of children and disabled people in there town planning.
We are calling on Croydon Council to install a Pelican (Pedestrian light controlled crossing) at the Lower Coombe Street and High Street Junction. Also to include the junctions on South end and Coombe road.
There are currently Traffic Lights for motor vehicles but nothing for pedestrians.
In the last five years alone, there have been two serious accidents at this junction and a further nine minor accidents. This is a busy intersection, used by many people, and is not safe particularly for young people, old people and disabled people or those who have mobility challenges or problems with their vision, who all face increased risks.
Close by there are two primary schools: Heathfield Academy and Howard Primary School, and there are also a number of care facilities.
A cycle box with priority lights for cyclists to allow them to be in a safer position going across the junction would also reduce the risks to cyclists.
There are many benefits of walking, wheeling, and cycling, from the health and well-being benefits to these methods of transport being less carbon-intensive. But to encourage more active travel in the area, the junction needs to be made safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
Croydon should be working towards Vision Zero, aiming for zero traffic fatalities on Croydon’s streets and we believe that all dangerous junctions in Croydon should be reviewed, especially when there is no priority given to pedestrians, to make them truly accessible and safer for all in our community.
