Our town, Steyning, is the heart of our community, linking essential services and facilities such as the High Street, nursery, library, school, church, and town centre. Every day, residents—including children, parents, older people, and visitors—must navigate busy roads without a dedicated pedestrian crossing, posing a significant risk to their safety.

The junction of Church Street, Church Lane, and Tanyard Lane is a key route used daily by families travelling to and from the school and nursery, as well as by residents accessing the library, High Street shops, church, and other town services. During peak times, particularly at school drop-off and pick-up hours, traffic levels increase significantly, making it difficult and potentially dangerous for pedestrians to cross safely.

Parents with young children, older residents, and individuals with mobility challenges face unnecessary stress and risk when crossing these roads. The absence of a safe crossing point discourages walking and limits access to vital community facilities. It also undermines efforts to promote active travel, reduce congestion, and support local businesses.

Installing a pedestrian crossing at this location would significantly improve safety and accessibility for all road users. It would provide a safer route for children travelling to school and nursery, support older and less mobile residents, encourage walking, and help create a more connected and inclusive town environment.

We ask West Sussex County Council to conduct a thorough assessment of the town's road network and to prioritise the installation of a pedestrian crossing at the junction of Church Street, Church Lane, and Tanyard Lane, where residents have identified a clear and pressing need.
