Install a pedestrian crossing and a 20 zone on West Street outside Western Primary School
The Issue
Every morning I walk my two children to Western Community Primary School. Like most families living to the north and east of school, the entrance we use is on West Street, a busy road where lots of parents park their cars, and vehicles often whizz by at 30 miles per hour. Unfortunately, using the nearest pelican crossing would add an additional 200 metres to our journey, and we're often in a rush.
Our regular walk to school should not impose a risk on our children’s safety. Although crossing by the gate is usually safe, we depend on drivers to remain vigilant and courteous, trusting they will slow down for us. Unfortunately, one too many times, this trust has been broken, and we, along with countless other parents, have been faced with dangerous situations that could have been avoided.
The installation of a pedestrian crossing right in front of the school entrance would ensure all children and parents can cross safely. In combination with reducing the speed limit to 20 mph, we would be creating a significantly safer environment, encouraging more families to walk to the school rather than drive, alleviating parking congestion and promoting a healthier lifestyle for our community.
Statistics show that when speed limits are reduced to 20 mph, the chance of serious injury or fatality in an accident drops dramatically, especially in areas with high pedestrian traffic like school zones. Most other schools in this part of North Tyneside are on quieter streets already but even they have successfully implemented measures - for example speed bumps by Richardson Dees, Redesdale, Jubilee and Hadrian Park. Around the country measures like this result in reduced traffic accidents while increasing community satisfaction and safety.
We urge the Mayor of North Tyneside to consider the safety of our children and the community by installing a pedestrian crossing and reducing the speed limit on West Street outside Western Community Primary School. Such actions would not only benefit those directly involved but would serve as a commitment to prioritizing the well-being and safety of our future generations.
