Install a lighted crosswalk on HWY 2 in Oldham

Install a lighted crosswalk on HWY 2 in Oldham
The Issue
Currently, for residents of Oldham and surrounding areas, navigating the busy HWY 2 poses a significant challenge. There is no safe crossing point to access essential local amenities like the Big Stop, Tim Hortons, and Burger King. Crossing the highway safely requires walking over 2 kilometers to the nearest safe crossing point beyond the Enfield Fire Station—a daunting and time-consuming 30-minute walk. This area in Nova Scotia desperately needs a lighted crosswalk to ensure the safety and convenience of its residents.
This intersection is poses unique and serious risk due to the high number of large transportation and logging trucks that access the truck stop and utilize HWY 2 to access the local logging businesses. The rate of speed is also a contributing factor for safety as vehicles travel at speeds over the posted speed limit in this stretch of highway. This section of Oldham also serves as a bus stop for local children going to and from school.
The absence of a safe crosswalk doesn’t just risk the safety of pedestrians; it also greatly affects the quality of life for those who live here. Families, seniors, and daily commuters face the hazardous task of crossing a busy highway, without the adequate infrastructure to do so safely. This is particularly challenging for those with limited mobility or young children. Many residents are forced to drive for safety, which is neither sustainable nor environmentally friendly.
Public Works and local government have the responsibility to protect its residents by ensuring safe infrastructure. Adverse weather conditions, coupled with the absence of a sidewalk along this stretch of HWY 2, make non-vehicular travel perilous. Installing a lighted crosswalk would not only enhance safety but also promote healthier and more sustainable transportation options.
Numerous studies underline the importance of pedestrian infrastructure in reducing accidents and promoting community well-being. Additionally, lighted crosswalks significantly improve driver awareness, resulting in reduced collision rates. This is a vital improvement that could potentially save lives and prevent injuries.
We urge local authorities and Public Works to prioritize the safety of Oldham/ Enfield residents by installing a lighted crosswalk on HWY 2. Investing in pedestrian safety is investing in our community’s future.
Please sign this petition to demand swift action from our local government and make Oldham a safer, more accessible place for everyone.
