I’m writing this petition with both a personal and community need in mind. Every morning, I go through the nerve-wracking experience of watching my young children cross a busy street to reach their bus stop. The thought of their safety being compromised by the lack of a designated crosswalk worries me immensely.

The stretch of road between Maple Lane and Caldwell Road is a crucial connector for pedestrians, including children, elderly, and other residents. Without a safe crossing, not only are we risking accidents and injuries, but we are also limiting the freedom and accessibility of mobility within our community.

In recent years, many cities have recognized the importance of safe pedestrian crossings in residential areas. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian fatalities accounted for 17% of all traffic fatalities in 2019. It is crucial to make proactive changes to prevent such incidents in our neighborhood.

A dedicated crosswalk would not only ensure the safety of our children as they go to school, but also promote walking as a healthy, environmentally-friendly mode of transportation. It’s a straightforward, cost-effective step toward enhancing the infrastructure and safety of our community.

I urge the city council to prioritize the installation of a crosswalk at this crucial location. Such an initiative would demonstrate a commitment to the safety and well-being of our residents, inviting more community engagement and improving the overall quality of life.
