The Issue

Every morning, students at San Bernardino High School face a dangerous challenge: crossing G Street to get to their school. This busy street has become a source of anxiety and fear for students and their families. I have personally witnessed how difficult it is for students to cross safely, as cars speed by without paying attention to pedestrians. This should not be the daily reality for students simply trying to get an education.

The lack of a designated crosswalk at the intersection of 20th and G puts students at a significant risk. G Street, being a major thoroughfare, sees heavy traffic throughout the day. Drivers rarely stop to allow students to cross, resulting in a potentially life-threatening situation. The installation of a crosswalk with proper signage and possibly traffic lights would ensure the safety of hundreds of students who cross this street every day.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, designated crosswalks can reduce pedestrian accidents by up to 40%. Implementing such a measure on G Street would not only protect our children but also promote a culture of safety and responsibility among drivers. Additionally, crosswalks improve traffic management and can help reduce the speed of cars traveling through school zones.

We call upon the city officials of San Bernardino, the Department of Transportation, and local stakeholders to prioritize student safety by installing a crosswalk at the intersection of 20th and G. The safety of our students cannot be compromised and it is crucial that we take immediate action to prevent any potential accidents.

Join us in our mission to make San Bernardino safer for our students. Please sign this petition and help us advocate for the safety our children deserve. Together, we can make a significant change and secure peace of mind for the families in our community.
