This past week, a tragic accident occurred in our neighborhood at the intersection of 196th and Tomlinson Road in Westfield. A child was hit by a car while trying to cross the street. This location, situated so perilously between a school and residential houses, is frequently traversed by families, children, and community members every day. The absence of a designated crosswalk, stop sign, reduced speed for school zone 24/7, and Speed bumps  and sidewalks endangers lives and demands immediate attention.

196th and Tomlinson is an essential artery for children traveling on foot or by bike to school. It is unconscionable that our children must risk their safety simply to receive an education. Without proper pedestrian infrastructure, the odds of such a tragedy recurring are unacceptably high.

We are calling on the Westfield city officials to take immediate action by installing a clearly marked crosswalk at this intersection. Additionally, there is a dire need to complete the sidewalks in front of the school and adjacent residential areas. These changes will not only meet safety regulations but will also enhance the walkability of our neighborhood and promote more active and healthier lifestyles for our children.

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that pedestrian safety is significantly improved with the presence of crosswalks and sidewalks. According to a report, there is a 40% decrease in pedestrian accidents in areas where crosswalks are clearly marked compared to those without them.

We must show our community and government officials that we care deeply about the safety of our children and families. A safer Westfield is possible, and it begins with ensuring that our children can walk to school without fear.
