Install a Crosswalk and Speed Bumps on Major Oaks Drive
The Issue
We have witnessed too many "near misses" between speeding cars and children at the intersection of Major Oaks Drive and Wildwood Crescent in Pickering, Ontario. It is only a matter of time before these close calls turn into tragedies. Our children deserve a safe route to school, yet they're constantly put at risk while crossing this busy street.
Currently, Valley Farm Public School does not allow drop-offs at their main driveway or connecting roads. The City Of Pickering has made it so that no parking is allowed in front of the school. Instead, students are encouraged to use Major Oaks Park as a path to school. Unfortunately, without proper safety measures in place at the intersection, this journey is fraught with danger.
We are calling upon the City Of Pickering City Hall to take immediate action by installing a crosswalk and speedbumps on Major Oaks Drive. This will bridge the gap between Major Oaks Park and the corner of Wildwood Crescent & Major Oaks Drive, ensuring that children and their families have a safe place to cross.
According to the Government of Ontario, pedestrian injuries are one of the leading causes of injuries in children under the age of 14. Introducing safety measures such as crosswalks and speedbumps can significantly reduce accidents and save lives. By making this change, we aim to protect the families and children of Pickering who use this route every day.
Implementing these changes is not only feasible but necessary. A crosswalk will give pedestrians the right of way, making crossing safer for everyone, while speed bumps will effectively slow down traffic, reducing the likelihood of accidents.
We urge the City Of Pickering to prioritize the safety of its residents. Your signature is important to demonstrate to city officials how crucial these safety measures are. Join us in making Major Oaks Drive a safer place for our community. Please sign this petition to support the installation of a crosswalk and speedbumps at Major Oaks Drive today.
