Install a Crossing Light at Loyola & Winchester, Libertyville

Install a Crossing Light at Loyola & Winchester, Libertyville

The Issue

Every morning and afternoon during the school year, my heart races as I watch my two kids, who attend Butterfield, navigate the dangerous intersection of Loyola - Winchester and Claridge - Winchester. They either walk or bike to school nearly 75% of the time, and each day presents a nerve-wracking challenge. This perilous crossing affects not only my family but numerous others in our Libertyville community.

At peak times, we witness the vulnerable journey of 25-35 school children crossing this busy street. The vehicles do not slow down, often ignoring the presence of these young students. The speed at which these cars barrel through the intersection is frightening, and it's a miracle that no tragic accidents have occurred yet. This is not just a problem during school hours; throughout the day, many other community members are also at risk as they attempt to cross.

A crossing light at Loyola and Winchester is not just a want—it's a crucial necessity for the safety of our children and fellow residents. According to the Federal Highway Administration, implementing pedestrian safety enhancements like crossing lights can reduce pedestrian crashes by as much as 50%. With Butterfield Elementary in the vicinity, the volume of young pedestrians is particularly high, making this area a high priority for safety improvements.

We urge the Libertyville city officials to take immediate action before a preventable tragedy strikes. Installing a crossing light will not only provide a safe passage for our kids but will demonstrate our community's commitment to safeguarding its most vulnerable members.

Please lend your voice to our cause. By signing this petition, you join many who believe in the necessity of a safer Libertyville. Let's work together to make Loyola and Winchester a safe intersection for everyone. Sign this petition and help transform our streets into a sanctuary for our children.

If you could connect me with the author of the petition so I can investigate further I would appreciate it. As an aside, this is a county road and not under the jurisdiction on the village but we can indeed help with any concrete. Mk
