The Issue

My mum, at just 55, has been grappling with the harsh realities of progressive multiple sclerosis for over a decade. To add to her challenges, she was recently diagnosed with secondary metastasised breast cancer, requiring frequent visits to Peterborough City Hospital for critical scans and treatments. Living each day in a motorised wheelchair, she has no control over her legs or torso, necessitating the use of a hoist for all physical maneuvers, including using the restroom.

Unfortunately, Peterborough City Hospital lacks a 'Changing Places' toilet, a facility specifically designed for individuals with severe physical disabilities. These facilities include essential equipment like an adult-sized changing bench and a hoist system. Without such a facility, many like my mum face the indignity and discomfort of inadequate restroom accommodations during already physically and emotionally daunting hospital visits.

According to Changing Places, over a quarter of a million people in the UK have disabilities that require fully accessible toilets, yet there are merely around 1,500 such facilities nationwide. This statistic highlights the dire need for more inclusive solutions, especially in essential healthcare settings.

Installing a 'Changing Places' toilet at Peterborough City Hospital would not only enhance the dignity and health of my mum during her hospital visits but also cater to countless others who face similar challenges. It is a vital step towards inclusivity and accessibility.

I urge the hospital administration trusts and local authorities to take immediate action. Let us ensure Peterborough City Hospital is equipped to serve all its patients with the respect and facilities they deserve. Please sign this petition to champion the rights and dignity of those with severe physical disabilities.
