Insist Upon Fairness: Demand IABA To Amend Its Selection Decision For EUBC Championship
The Issue
The latest decision made by the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) has left a stinging blow, not just among the boxing community, but in the hearts of 14 young hopefuls who had dreams of representing Ireland at the forthcoming EUBC Schoolboys & Schoolgirls European Championship. Once again, IABA has shown disregard for open and fair selection, leaving children devastated and disheartened. These young boxers only learned about their exclusion through the harsh channels of social media and WhatsApp, instead of proper communication from an organisation meant to support and nurture them.
As it stands, IABA has selected only 14 out of 28 eligible children. It is noteworthy that these excluded children are not just amateurs but diligent sportspeople, the potential future Olympians of our nation. Their humiliation comes from an association that not two months ago, was accused of similar disregard. Yet, despite the emotional and mental distress inflicted on these young talents, no one seems to be taking accountability for these unjust decisions.
Clubs across Ireland, directly affected by this decision, have sought answers. Yet, their petitions seem to be moving in circles, trapped between bureaucracy and indifference. We need IABA to recognise the mistake made, own up to the implications of their actions, and rectify the situation. It's only fair; these 14 excluded children have earned the right, through their dedication and tenacity, to be part of that Championship.
Ultimately, boxing is not just a game of might; it's a game of rights as well. We, therefore, insist that IABA reconsiders its decision, bring back the true spirit of the sport, and allow all 28 deserving candidates their well-earned chance to participate at the prestigious EUBC Championship. We urge you to stand with us in this fight for fairness; sign this petition and let the IABA know that their decision is unacceptable. Together, let's make them do the right thing.
