Insist that CPL's Director and Board of Trustees Resign Over Community Outrage!

The Issue

The Centerville Public Library's mission emphasizes its role as "a center of community life," encouraging and supporting "civic, intellectual, and cultural pursuits" (Centerville Library Mission Statement).

Despite these stated values, the library’s leadership has made a decision that directly contradicts its mission: the unwarranted and unjust firing of Megan McClelland, the beloved Youth Services Librarian. Megan has been an invaluable part of the library community, building strong connections with families and children, fostering a love of reading, and creating a welcoming environment for all. This decision was made without cause by the Library Director and two members of the Board of Trustees, leaving the community shocked and heartbroken.

Following Megan’s firing, the library posted a statement on social media that garnered nearly 200 comments from community members expressing their support for Megan and their dismay at the decision. However, instead of acknowledging this outpouring of support and listening to the public’s concerns, the library leadership chose to delete the post entirely—silencing the voices of the community it is supposed to serve. In addition, countless emails and phone calls made to the Library Director by concerned patrons have gone unanswered, demonstrating a complete lack of transparency and accountability.

It is important to acknowledge that the hardworking staff members in circulation and other positions continue to be dedicated, welcoming, and supportive, making it even more difficult for the community to speak out against the library as a whole. These wonderful individuals are a vital part of what makes the library special and valued. Our frustration is not with them but with the current leadership, whose actions do not reflect the spirit and mission of the library.

The Director and Board of Trustees have shown they are out of touch with the community’s needs and concerns. The library exists to serve the public, not to protect the positions of its leadership. We, the undersigned, believe that the library's leadership has failed to uphold the institution's mission and values. We call for the resignation of the Library Director and the Board of Trustees to restore accountability, transparency, and trust within our cherished community institution.
