Beware a dangerous "bait and switch" move by the proposed industrial waste facility in Clinton on Route 145. Here is a very disturbing fact: If the SR&R industrial waste applicant succeeds in getting their proposed volume reduction facility approved at the Town level, obtaining a General Permit for Staging and Transfer of Contaminated Soil is as easy as sending a check for $250 to DEEP. At that point, storage of up to 10,000 cubic yards of hazardous waste is permitted WITHOUT obtaining approval from DEEP. It is simply a “registration”. Approval is only needed for volumes greater than 10,000 cubic yards. However, if we have a 500 year flood and the applicant is staging 10,000 cubic yards of hazardous waste soil at the site, our town beach will become a hazardous waste dump. Below is a picture of the aftermath of a recycling center in Gorham, ME that went far beyond their original permit and left the town with a horrendous cleanup task.
