Legal Protection for Chicano Cultural Murals in Logan Heights, Sherman, and Golden Hill

The Issue

On October 17th, a cherished piece of our community was destroyed. Daniel 'Dentlok' Angele's, “Rey Mysterio” Mural was painted out this month. Join us and RISE UP to demand justice, we will make demands of City Leaders and write local codes to protect OUR Murals.

This is not just about one mural; it's about preserving the rich tapestry of Chicano artistry that adorns the neighborhoods of Logan Heights, Sherman, and Golden Hill.

Chicano murals are more than just paint on walls; they are visual narratives that encapsulate our history and identity. They celebrate our roots while challenging social injustices. However, these cultural landmarks face threats from urban development and lack of legal protection.

In San Diego alone, we have lost countless murals over the years due to gentrification or simple neglect. In the fall of 2020 three murals by nationally acclaimed Chicano artists Salvador Robert Torres, Mario Torero and Salvador Barajas were destroyed and damaged at Logan Memorial Educational Complex in Logan Heights, (source: SD Union Tribune), setting a worrying precedent for other such artworks across California.

We must act now to protect these invaluable pieces of art that contribute so much to our community's identity. We call upon local authorities to recognize the cultural significance of these murals and establish protective measures against their destruction or alteration without community consent.

Let us ensure future generations can appreciate this beautiful testament to Chicano culture as we do today. Please sign this petition to safeguard the artistic legacy within Logan Heights, Sherman Heights and Golden Hill neighborhoods.
