Initiate judicial reform to protect the innocent

The Issue

Every day, countless innocent individuals find their lives tragically altered by a judicial system that fails to uphold the principles promised by the U.S. Constitution. My family and I have become unwilling participants in this grave injustice: I, having been falsely accused, and close family members enduring the heartbreak of a loved one serving 20 years in prison despite her innocence. After spending $40k on two attorneys and resorting to a public defender, it became overwhelmingly clear that the system does not prioritize presumption of innocence as it should. Instead, the burden falls heavily on the accused to prove innocence rather than the state proving guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

This is a call for serious and much-needed reform of the judicial and penal systems. Under the current system, too many are detained pre-trial or pre-conviction without solid evidence, leading to unwarranted and prolonged detainment of innocent individuals. The focus needs to shift back to the foundational tenets of our Constitution: due process and the presumption of innocence.

I propose a transformation that would restrict pretrial detentions, ensuring they only occur when clear and convincing evidence demonstrates that the individual poses a direct, intentional, and immediate threat to another person’s life, liberty, or bodily integrity. This reform aligns with constitutional principles and would prevent additional tragedies born from wrongful convictions and unnecessary detentions.

Statistics show that pretrial detention contributes to higher rates of conviction—often due to coercive plea deals—rather than justice being served. About 70% of individuals in jail are awaiting trial, not serving a sentence, according to The Prison Policy Initiative. These individuals, who haven’t been proven guilty, face significant hurdles in defending their cases effectively, further skewing justice's scales.

Our call to action is clear and urgent. Demand a justice system that serves its intended purpose of protecting the innocent and punishing the guilty by signing this petition. With your support, we can pressure lawmakers to pass legislation that reins in excessive and unjust use of pretrial detention, safeguarding the rights and freedoms of innocent citizens. Stand with us in demanding Justice for All.
