Initiate Independent Investigation into Child Sex Abuse Crimes at Niños de Mexico.

The Issue

In March of 2022, a minister and former staff member at the Niños de Mexico (Children of Mexico, Inc., based in Union, MO, USA, and working in Mexico) collection of orphan homes in Mexico was arrested for child sexual abuse, having sexually abused the girls in the orphan home where he and his wife were acting as houseparents. Despite one of the victims bringing the abuse to the attention of the leadership of Niños de Mexico, this information was not passed to the proper authorities in Mexico, leaving the girls in the care of their abuser at the Niños de Mexico home.

While the perpetrator was eventually arrested and two staff members resigned, this case is only the most public of a system of institutional abuse perpetrated and perpetuated in Niños de Mexico over years. The pattern is clear.

  1. A house parent or staff member sexually abuses a child or adolescent in Niños care.
  2. The abuse is reported to the leadership of Niños de Mexico, either by the victim(s), a witness, or another concerned party.
  3.  Leadership fails to adequately report the abuse to the proper authorities, perpetuating the abuse, and solidifying the culture of abuse inside the homes where the children in the care of Niños de Mexico live.

The Board of Directors of this institution have been made aware of six such cases fitting this pattern (just in the tenure of the current Executive Director).

Unless there is an open and independent third party investigation into the sexual abuse crimes that have taken place at the Niños de Mexico children's home, with special attention to staff and personnel who knew about these crimes and failed to report them, we will never know the extent to which the children homed at Niños de Mexico have been victimized, and all the 107 children currently at the Niños de Mexico homes remain at risk.

As more victims and whistleblowers begin to speak out, now is the time to put pressure on the Board of Directors of Niños de Mexico to submit to an open and independent third party investigation into their handling and reporting of the child sexual abuse crimes in their organization.
