The issue

Living in Perth and needing to travel to Geraldton frequently (or living in Geraldton and needing to travel to Perth), I've personally felt the strain of our limited travel options. As a resident, the lack of accessible, efficient public transportation from Perth to Geraldton and visa versa has been a constant challenge. The journey, which could be pleasant and leisurely, often becomes a lengthy and stressful ordeal due to inadequate travel facilities. This is why I am advocating for the initiation of a new regional rail service connecting these two significant West Australian cities.

Currently, our primary travel choices are either long car drives, intermittent bus services or pricey airfares, neither of which offer the efficiency, comfort, or consistency that a dedicated rail service could provide. Introducing a rail link would not only ease travel burdens but also significantly boost regional connectivity and economic growth between Perth and Geraldton.

There are rail services from Perth to Kalgoorlie (and intermittent stations) via the Prospector, Perth to Merredin (and intermittent stations) via the Merredin Link, Perth to Northam via the Avonlink, and Perth to Bunbury via the Australind. Currently, there are no such rail services to the northern regional areas. Current services are limited to bus services - which are often uncomfortable, unhygienic and sometimes lengthy. With a rail service - like those listed above - the travel time can be speedier, safer, more comfortable and less expensive.

Indian Ocean Drive is a prime example to SAFETY and BUDGET costs. The initial cost of the project was $95 million. The road, mainly the section between Yanchep and Lancelin, has been the scene of multiple car accidents. An 18-month period to June 2017 saw more than 50 serious crashes occuring on the road, while at least nine fatalities and 41 people have been taken to hospital as a result of crashes along Indian Ocean Drive between 2014 and 2019.

Since 2020 Indian Ocean Drive has received over $85 million in upgrades to improve the safety of the route, including widening and realignment works and the addition of overtaking lanes, audible lines and advisory signage in multiple languages. However as of October 2025 the road remains notorious for its rate of accidents and serious crashes.

The benefits of such a service are manifold. For one, it would provide a safer, more reliable alternative to road travel, reducing traffic burden and accidents along the way. Additionally, a rail service would foster increased tourism, as potential visitors could enjoy a convenient travel option, enhancing the region's attractiveness for local and international tourists alike.

Furthermore, this rail initiative aligns with environmental sustainability goals by potentially decreasing car emissions and encouraging greener travel patterns. With growing concerns about climate change, investing in efficient public transportation can be a pivotal step in reducing our carbon footprint.

Studies have shown that countries with robust rail networks not only gain economic advantages but also witness improved quality of life for their citizens. A rail service from Perth to Geraldton would mean better accessibility to employment opportunities, educational institutions, and healthcare services—functions we deem fundamental for thriving communities.

I urge policymakers and transportation authorities to consider this proposal seriously, taking into account the demographic demands and future-proofing the region through modern infrastructure investments. The implementation of a new rail line could be a groundbreaking step forward in addressing the current limitations and paving the way for a more connected Western Australia.

Please join me in calling for the government to commence planning and funding for a new rail service from Perth to Geraldton. Sign this petition to show your support for more dynamic, sustainable, and efficient regional transport solutions. Together, we can make this vital change happen.
