Induct Monte Coleman into the NFL Hall of Fame
The Issue
Monte Coleman is a hometown hero in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and a stalwart figure who has inspired countless individuals both on and off the field. Growing up in a small town, where opportunities were limited, Monte has shown us what hard work, dedication, and integrity can achieve. He walked onto the football team at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) in Conway — remarkably, having never played high school football — and proceeded to set a school record with 22 career interceptions. He became the first player from Central Arkansas ever drafted in the NFL when the Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders) selected him in the 11th round (289th overall) of the 1979 NFL Draft.
Coleman played 16 seasons with the Washington Redskins (1979–1994), appearing in 215 regular season games — second in franchise history, trailing only Darrell Green — and 21 career postseason games. He is one of only three players in Washington history to play at least 16 seasons with the franchise, alongside Sammy Baugh and Darrell Green. During his career he appeared in four Super Bowls, winning three: Super Bowls XVII, XXII, and XXVI. These accomplishments alone are remarkable and deserve the highest recognition.
Monte's statistics speak volumes: he holds a franchise record in games played (216) and 1,002 total tackles; 43.5 official career sacks (plus an additional 10.5 unofficial sacks recorded before the NFL began tracking the statistic in 1982, for a combined total of 56.5 — fourth all-time in Washington franchise history); and 17 interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns. He was named to the All-Madden Team in 1993, selected as Washingtonian of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine in 1996, named one of the 70 Greatest Redskins in 2002 (a list later expanded to the 80 Greatest Redskins in 2012), and inducted into the Washington Redskins Ring of Fame on December 20, 2015.
Following his NFL career, Coleman returned to his hometown of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where he joined the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football staff in 2003 as linebackers coach. He advanced to defensive coordinator in 2006 and 2007, and was named head football coach on November 26, 2007, serving in that role through 2017. The highlight of his coaching tenure came on December 8, 2012, when he led UAPB to the SWAC Championship, defeating Jackson State 24–21 in Birmingham, Alabama, in a nationally televised game on ESPN — the program's first SWAC title.
Off the field, Monte continued his legacy through community service and mentoring programs, giving back to Pine Bluff and further nurturing the values he stands for. His commitment to his hometown and his unwavering support for youth development programs showcases a character worthy of Hall of Fame recognition. Every year Monte dedicates countless hours to engage and uplift the community, proving that his talents extend beyond the gridiron.
Enshrining Monte Coleman in the NFL Hall of Fame is not just about honoring his accomplishments on the field but recognizing the indelible mark he has left on our community and future generations. It reflects the narrative of an athlete who has exemplified excellence, resilience, and altruism throughout his life. We urge the NFL Hall of Fame committee to induct Monte Coleman, acknowledging a man who has given so much to the game and those around him.
