The Issue

One of the master architects of contemporary popular American music, Clyde Stubblefield embodies everything the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame represents: Originality. Influence. Impact.

Clyde Stubblefield was one of the most revolutionary drummers of the 20th Century, who's syncopated style of play transcended both time and genre. Primarily known as one of James Brown's drummers between 1965-1971, Stubblefield provided the backbeat to some of Brown's biggest hits, including Cold Sweat, I Got The Feelin’, Mother Popcorn, Say It Loud-I’m Black and I’m Proud, and Give It Up or Turnit a Loose. Clyde’s rhythmic innovations during this era became foundational to James Brown’s sound and played a crucial role in what we consider the literal creation of funk music.

But no Clyde Stubblefield recording would prove to be more consequential than Funky Drummer. Sampled countless times, Funky Drummer’s transcendence not only became a cornerstone of hip hop culture, but provided a rhythmic backdrop to some of the biggest names in pop and electronic dance music, including Public Enemy, Prince, Britney Spears, LL Cool J, Ed Sheeran, Beastie Boys, Kenny G, Alanis Morrisette and Aphex Twin.

However, despite Clyde's influence, The Rock Hall continues to overlook his impact on the global landscape of modern music, while simultaneously displaying Stubblefield's drum sticks in its museum. And ironically, if you visit James Brown's induction page on the RRHoF website, the featured image prominently include's Clyde Stubblefield in the background.

We’re in an era where culture is evolving faster than it ever has, in this case music culture. Our intent is to preserve a crucial piece of our musical foundation. To recognize and celebrate an individual who’s imprint spans the globe. We inviting the musical community to understand the history—to be conscious of lineage, ancestry and legacy. To preserve one single, yet crucial, piece of American music foundation. To enshrine an individual who helped shape cultures that have become so beloved across the globe. As the cultures evolve it is pivotal that whoever is holding the the torch understands the genealogy of the art forms.

Please sign this petition to induct Clyde Stubblefield into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in an effort to acknowledge his contributions to music and solidify his legacy for generations to come.
