Friends,
There is no news to report today, and that's too bad. I am fasting today to spend my time praying for a pardon for Keith and thinking about the causes of injustice existing today. I've been reading Claudia Rankine's Citizen: An American Lyric and the Old Testament prophet Amos, who wrote against slavery and oppression and inspired Martin Luther King, Jr.
Why today, particularly: Twenty years ago today was the day Keith was arrested, initially for a purse snatching which he also did not do. But even as he was cleared from that crime, he was re-arrested before he could leave the Elkhart County jail for the robbery for which he was wrongfully convicted.
I have written the editorial I've mentioned in the previous update, and I am waiting to hear from the Indianapolis Star on if they are interested in running it. I am aiming now to convince Indiana's upcoming governor, Eric Holcomb, to honor the commitment he made during the third gubernatorial debate to pardon Keith if the facts in support of a pardon hold up. Holcomb has not been inaugurated yet, so he cannot pardon Keith yet. But if he shows no sign of honoring his word, I hope that you will join me in being a large force for justice for Keith.
Meanwhile, however, his case is still getting attention. This past weekend, the Indianapolis Star identified Keith's case as one of seven to watch for a resolution in 2017: http://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2016/12/31/7-cases-watch-out-2017/95953728/
And the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette has a feature today of headlines they would like to see in 2017, and one of them is a pardon for Keith: http://www.journalgazette.net/opinion/Headlines-we-d-like-to-see-in-2017
We may need to keep up the pressure, but I believe that Keith will be pardoned in 2017. Share his story on social media, and we will take whatever action we need to take to get Eric Holcomb to pardon Keith.
Cheers,
Jack Heller
