Friends,
I would welcome hearing about the contacts you are making with the Congressional Black Caucus about Keith Cooper's case. When I sent my message on Monday, I asked for a reply back. This was the message I sent them: https://www.change.org/p/indiana-governor-pardon-an-innocent-man/u/18464213. So far, I haven't had a response, but I still think I may get one. If you get one, either from the caucus or directly from your own representative, please tell us about it.
If you need the email contact information for the caucus, it's here: https://cbc-butterfield.house.gov/contact-us/email-us. There are 45 members of the Congressional Black Caucus; if your representative is a member, you may find their contact information here: https://cbc-butterfield.house.gov/members.
One comment on Monday from a petition follower suggested that we may get more response from phone calls than from emails. I would suggest trying both. There is a phone number for the Congressional Black Caucus: 202-226-9776. Wouldn't it be awesome if several thousand of us called them, asking them to put the pressure on Governor Pence to pardon Keith Cooper? You may also call your own representative.
If you do call them, keep in mind that the persons answering the phone may be unfamiliar with Keith Cooper. Let them know that Keith Cooper was an Indiana resident wrongly convicted and incarcerated for armed robbery in Indiana. Although he was released from prison in 2006, he still has a felony conviction on his record. There is plenty of evidence supporting a pardon and exoneration: DNA evidence pointing to a different person, recanted testimony from the victims, a recommendation for a pardon from the original prosecutor, and the unanimous recommendation of a full pardon from the Indiana Parole Board. Despite all of this, Mike Pence has refused to pardon Keith Cooper. I think the caucus will be favorable towards Keith Cooper, so ask them to consider a resolution from its membership, calling upon Pence to pardon Keith Cooper.
Your help with this is always appreciated.
Jack Heller
