Friends, On the 20th of October, the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette published its endorsement of Curtis Hill to be elected Indiana's next Attorney General. They did so even as (a) they said nothing against his opponent Lorenzo Arrendondo, and (b) they brought up another notorious case in which Hill pursued overcharged burglars with murder. You may read that endorsement here: http://www.journalgazette.net/opinion/endorsements/Worthy-adversaries-15813265 and you may find out about the burglars charged with murder here: http://abcnews.go.com/US/elkhart-felony-murder-conviction-reversed/story?id=33865514. With the opposition of Hill's office to Keith Cooper's retrial, with the office's earlier opposition to a fair settlement for Cooper's co-defendant, and with the Elkhart 4 case, we may well wonder what really recommends entrusting justice in Indiana to Curtis Hill. Michael Leppert is a political blogger in Indianapolis who raises all of the right questions about Hill and his candidacy. It is my hope that before the election, someone will finally question Curtis Hill on the record about his office's history with Keith Cooper's case. An excerpt: "Pence and Hill are the only two people I have been able to identify who do not want Cooper’s name cleared. At least Pence’s office has given a reason, albeit a dodgy unbelievable one, for their reluctance to issue the pardon. Even the victims of the original crime support the pardon. Hill is just flat out hiding from it. And I want an honest answer from him to one, just one question: Why?" Back to me: I still encourage you to call or email Hill's office regarding Keith Cooper's case. I don't exactly like to do a script because then everyone sounds scripted, but you may ask something along the lines of, "I am calling regarding Keith Cooper's petition for a retrial. I am asking that the prosecutor's office not block the retrial with procedural objections and asking the prosecutor's office to support a pardon for Cooper from the governor's office." By the way, our objections are to the way Hill's office is handling Keith Cooper's case. His phone staff has always been patient with me when I've call, so please be respectful to them while still making your views known. (The same cannot necessarily be said about the phone staff of Mike Pence's office nor his spokesman.)
