Friends,
Signatures on the petition have slowed down considerably, but from what I can see, sharing is up considerably on Facebook and Twitter. Please continue sharing, as what this effort needs more than signatures is attention.
Before we knew how Curtis Hill had been involved in the raw deal that got Keith Cooper released from prison, a friend of this petition effort attended the opening of the Trump campaign headquarters for Indiana in Carmel, a suburb of Indianapolis. He met Curtis Hill there, and they talked a bit about Keith Cooper's case. You may read his report of this encounter here: https://www.facebook.com/PardonKeithCooper/posts/591575414344242:0. Again, at the time, we did not who Curtis Hill is. So my takeaway from this report is that Mr. Hill is willing to make assertions about the case which both malign Keith Cooper and turn attention from his own complicity in the bad deal he brokered for Mr. Cooper in 2006.
As far as I am concerned, this should disqualify Mr. Hill as a candidate to be Indiana's next Attorney General. The example of Michael Christofeno, the prosecutor of the robbery charge against Keith Cooper in 1997, shows that a person may make a genuine effort to right the wrongs which he had done: http://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2016/04/26/former-prosecutor-keith-cooper-must-pardoned/83492282/. But we see no sign of Mr. Hill doing the same.
It would be fine to continue contacting the office of Governor Pence, this time letting them know that helping Mr. Hill's political career is no reason to perpetuate an injustice against Keith Cooper: 317-232-4567.
But we need also to look to the future beyond Pence's inaction. So call the office of Eric Holcomb, the GOP candidate to be the next Indiana governor, asking him to pledge to pardon Keith Cooper if he is elected, 317-232-4545.
You might think that this information would bring a pledge from the Democratic candidate John Gregg to pardon Keith Cooper if he's elected, but so far, we've had no such pledge. I am sure his campaign has the information about Mr. Cooper's case, so consider sending your encouragement for a pledge to john@greggforgovernor.com.
There have been two good responses from Indiana politicians to Keith Cooper's quest for a pardon. The first was state representative David Ober, Republican, who wrote a letter calling upon Governor Pence to pardon Cooper. If you are on Twitter, please tweet a thank-you to Rep. Ober, @DaveOber.
And we have heard from the campaign of Lorenzo Arredondo, the Democratic candidate to be Indiana's next Attorney General. They have called the treatment of Mr. Cooper horrible, and they are working with their own contacts to draw attention to his case. Tweet them a thank-you too: @judgearredondo.
Any politician of any party who releases a statement in support of a pardon for Keith Cooper will get a spot in an update.
