Indiana Domestic Violence Registry 

SUMMARY

A domestic violence registry is a free, public, searchable database of individuals convicted of domestic violence-related crimes. Domestic violence registries allow individuals to research potential partners to ensure they do not have a history of domestic violence and may let survivors of domestic violence know where their abuser is.

Domestic Violence affects the entire family unit and not just the victims. Case by case sensitivity because families are structured differently. Some victims have children. Other Victims don’t. Some victims are younger and the parents have to deal with their child dating for the first time. 

My Story… 

I was a victim of Domestic Violence 2004-2006. I am a D.V. Survivor. I made the mistake of leaving the marital home and entering into a Domestic Violence shelter. My ex- abuser was able to gain physical custody because he borrowed money from his family to pay the attorney fees for a Divorce. I was devastated but decided that I would rather die in war than die in the streets by addiction. So I joined the Army in December of 2006 and started boot camp in January 2007.

The last Domestic Violence incident occurred around the holidays of 2006. I knew if I stuck around in Ohio that my abuser and his family would have me imprisoned or thrown in a looney bin to make me look like the bad guy. My abuser was able to avoid being found guilty of Domestic Violence - Battery with Injuries by receiving my subpoena while I was in Basic Training and not forwarding it to my family in Indiana. So he basically walked away from court with my child and everything that I owned because I couldn’t carry it with me to the Army, and he never returned any of it years later even though it was court-ordered. 

Fast Forward to the October-Dec 2019 Trauma Calendar Anniversary of when our Domestic Violence situation occurred. I picked my 15-year-old daughter up for Christmas break 2019. I did not like the way she physically looked in the face. Her face was peaked/very pale, and she wasn’t her normal playful self. She didn’t want to tell me what happened because she thought that I would be mad at her or go postal on her Ohio Family because of what happened. So she did what any 15 year old would do and told my Mom in order for Grammy to tell me. 

What happened on the 2019 Anniversary was the same thing that my ex abuser had done to me in 2006. Accept this time my 15 year old was his target. He choked, slammed her up against a wall, and lost the fight he started. Somebody called the police and good ol’ Daddy ( a.k.a. My abuser) pressed battery charges on our 15 year old 2019. In 2020 I seriously had to watch my daughter being charged with a Domestic Violence Battery in Ohio. She was fingerprinted and placed on the National Domestic Battery Registry by the same family of enablers that helped my abuser avoid Domestic Battery charges in 2007. 

What happened in 2006? My ex-husband started pushing me around in front of my children while he was drunk. Our baby began wailing in her crib, and I ran to grab her. I picked her up to console her and my abuser began chest-bumping me to put her down. He chest bumped me many times before I had to place her back into the crib and retreat to a safe space for myself since I was the target of his aggression.

I was able to barricade myself in my room. My abuser was so angry drunk that he was able to break through the makeshift barricade of a dresser against a door on carpet. (Lesson Learned) Once he breached the room all I could do was prepare for the ultimate Domestic Battery showdown between an abuser and a woman that ain’t gonna take it or die that day. 

My abuser rushed me with such force. He CHOKED and SLAMMED me against the wall. I was able to defend myself and he released the first choke. We then somehow fell onto the bed where he climbed on top of me and started to double hand choke me. I was unable to break his grasp at first and started to accept the inevitable. When everything started going black I decided it was time to fight back. I was able to cup slam his ears, and then started to poke out his eyes. I was able to escape him at that point and had to run out of the house to get to the police station. 

I thought for sure that I would be awarded custody of our baby, but I was wrong. I was covered with 90% Bruises over my body/neck. During the D.V. healing process, I decided to join the Army because 3 Hots and a Cot sounded better than dying in the streets and/or couch surfing homeless Domestic Violence shelters wasn’t cutting it. 

0n the Anniversary of my Domestic Violence Experience I’m launching a Mission that involves all of us Survivors and Supporters. In Loving Memory of the LIFE I thought I was supposed to have, and for all the victims that didn’t make it out of the Domestic Violence situation. AND because my abuser was able to have my daughter placed on a Domestic Battery Registry after avoiding it 14 years prior. 

This is also for ALL the Victims that did make it out, and to help a fraction of Humans have a safer future because we Victims warned them of the danger like the robot from Lost in Space. Danger Will Robinson! 

No parent or victim should have to go through something as WE did! It’s basically destroyed, my family. But somehow has benefited my abuser's family for 16 years sadly. 

We are working out the kinks in the idea of a Registry for Domestic Violence Abusers. We want ours to be similar to the Violent Sexual Offender Registry in Indiana.
