   We, the residents and ratepayers of Tamworth Regional Council and surrounding communities, are calling on the NSW Parliament to establish an independent inquiry into local government governance, accountability, and oversight across New South Wales. Under the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW), councils are required to operate in an open and transparent manner, act in the public interest, ensure responsible financial stewardship of public funds, and provide effective community participation in decision-making. Many residents across NSW believe these principles are not being consistently applied in practice. Concerns raised include: lack of transparency in council decision-making insufficient accountability for governance and financial decisions limited access to timely, accurate and complete information for councillors and the public inconsistent or ineffective community participation processes inadequate responses to governance and conduct concerns declining public confidence in local government We are also concerned that current oversight and regulatory arrangements may not be sufficiently effective in ensuring consistent compliance with statutory obligations and good governance standards. What we are calling for We call on the NSW Parliament to: Establish an independent inquiry into local government governance and oversight in NSW Review council compliance with the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW), including transparency, accountability, financial stewardship, and public participation obligations Assess the effectiveness of current ministerial and regulatory oversight of local government Recommend reforms to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public trust Ensure councils remain focused on delivering core services such as roads, waste management, infrastructure, and responsible management of rates and public funds Closing statement We submit this petition in good faith in the interests of restoring public confidence, strengthening accountability, and ensuring that local government in New South Wales operates transparently, lawfully, and in the public interest.
