For many years, I have relied on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) to support myself due to my ongoing battle with a permanent disability. While I remain grateful for the financial aid provided by SSDI, there are significant limitations in the current system. The present cap on work-related income is just $1,690 per month, and $19,286.66 based on the last time the limits were adjusted in 1977 for those who are blind. This restrictive policy hampers our ability to achieve financial independence and improve our living standards.

Imagine facing the costs of medication, specialized equipment, and everyday living essentials on a fixed income that barely covers necessities. Many SSDI recipients, like myself, are eager to engage in meaningful employment and contribute more to society but are held back by these outdated income restrictions. This current cap does not reflect the rising cost of living, healthcare expenses, or the desire and capability many of us have to work and earn more.

Our proposal is to adjust the SSDI work-related income limits to $8,817.21 per month for the general beneficiaries and $10,500 per month for those who are blind. and or raise the the number of working hours to 25-30 up from 15 or less in some cases  This increase would enable more individuals on disability benefits to pursue part-time or occasional work without the fear of losing essential support. This change would empower us to better support ourselves and our families, fostering financial stability and overall well-being.

The adjustments we propose are not just numbers—they represent hope for a better quality of life. It is vital that we move beyond these financial constraints to reflect modern realities and create an inclusive and supportive environment for all.

I urge lawmakers, social security officials, and concerned citizens to understand the profound impact this change would have on individuals and families already navigating the challenges of disability. By increasing these income thresholds, we can promote independence, improve economic security, and reinforce the dignity and morale of those living with disabilities.
