Increase the Welfare of America: Raise the Federal Minimum Wage to $15
The Issue
Many people with federal minimum-wage jobs in America are struggling to support and nourish their families, barely getting by.
This petition is to raise the federal minimum wage to $15/hr, increasing the general welfare of citizens in America and making sure they are being taken care of.
The current federal minimum wage was last raised in 2009 to $7.25/hr, and since then, the federal wage has decreased by 30% in value. The federal wage has been one of the lowest minimum wage values (with inflation) in the history of minimum wage.
According to a 2022 Urban Institute study, "increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour would lift 7.6 million people in the United States out of poverty." This means that many would not have to live in unsuitable living conditions and, instead, be nourished and taken care of because they can afford it.
Take Jordan, who was interviewed by Vox, for example. He had medical bills from visiting the emergency rooms of $2,000, but his job was a cashier at Dollar Tree for the federal minimum wage, $7.25 per hour. He stated that $10 an hour would be a fairer wage, but he knows that those who have children and families would need to have a salary of $15 per hour. He lives in Kentucky, which turns out to be a state that has a minimum wage of $7.25/hr (the federal minimum wage), so raising the federal wages would impact more than just a couple of people; it would impact citizens in sixteen states.
The time to act is NOW. The sooner that the federal minimum wage increases, the fewer people with minimum-wage jobs fall into poverty every day. Increase the minimum wage, increase the general welfare of the citizens of America.
We will send these signatures to the President.
