The journey of dealing with mental health is personal to many, including myself who painfully witnessed the loss of multiple best friends to suicide. They felt alone - devoid of support - during their toughest times. There's an overwhelming need to do more for our children and nothing scrutinizes that fact more than the loss of those close to us. Increasing the number of licensed school counselors is critical to addressing this escalating crisis. According to the American School Counselor Association, a ratio of 250 students per counselor is recommended but the current national average is approximately 430 students to 1 counselor. This disparity leaves many students unnoticed and without the essential emotional support they need. New measures need to be taken urgently to hire more licensed counselors in schools, thereby ensuring no child is left alone in their struggle. Yielding to this urgency and recognizing the needs of students will bring us closer to a healthier, more supportive school environment for all.
