Increase the financial literacy credit for Arizona highschoolers to 1 credit

The Issue

Growing up in Arizona, I've witnessed firsthand how a lack of financial literacy can have significant ramifications on the lives of young individuals. Many in my community, including some of my closest friends and family members, struggle with managing their finances effectively. This all-too-common scenario often results in cycles of poor financial decisions, leading to stress, debt, and limited economic mobility.

To address this pressing issue, I strongly believe that implementing a mandatory one-credit financial literacy course in high schools across Arizona is essential. By requiring one credit of financial literacy for high school graduation, we can equip our future generations with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed financial decisions. According to a study by the National Endowment for Financial Education, students exposed to financial education courses significantly improve their financial behaviors and decision-making skills.

With the increasing complexity of the financial world, it’s imperative that students understand fundamental financial concepts such as budgeting, saving, investing, managing debt, and understanding credit scores. Learning the foundational concepts of financial literacy at a young age can lead to a more financially responsible adulthood.

By implementing a mandatory one-credit course on financial literacy for highschoolers, students will experience a full-year course that will change the way they view money going into adulthood.

We have an opportunity to create systemic change that not only benefits individual students but also strengthens our communities and economy over the long term. Implementing this requirement could break cycles of financial mismanagement and impart a sense of control and security among young Arizonans.

I urge the Arizona Department of Education and state legislators to take the necessary steps to make financial literacy a required 1 credit course. Please sign this petition to support our youth in building a secure and prosperous future.
