The Issue

Our beautiful mum took her own life on 31st July, a heart-shattering reality we're still struggling to comprehend. She was a beacon of light in our lives, facing immense challenges with grace: she survived breast cancer, only to have her home destroyed by a fire that claimed her precious memories, possessions, and her beloved cat. Despite these devastating blows, the support she desperately needed never came, resulting in the tragic loss of a life that meant so much to so many.

The mental health team failed her repeatedly. She tried several times before to end her life, but no effective intervention came. It took losing someone we dearly loved to see just how fragile the support systems are. This isn't just our story; countless others suffer in silence, falling through cracks in the system that is supposed to protect them.

the role of mental health services is critical, yet the council's response has proven woefully inadequate. Our mum’s case reflects a broader issue that requires urgent attention. Thousands in our area face mental health crises without adequate support, leading to preventable tragedies.

Statistics show that mental health-related deaths have been on the rise, with nearly 8,000 people taking their own lives in the UK each year. Moreover, according to Mind, 1 in 4 people experience mental health problems each year. Despite this, mental health services remain severely underfunded and understaffed.

We propose several actionable measures that could make a significant difference. First, local councils need increased funding specifically dedicated to mental health services. This must include the hiring and training of more mental health professionals who can deliver regular, effective care and intervention. Additionally, we recommend the establishment of community outreach programmes aimed at offering preventive support and education about mental health.

Such measures can transform the current systems from failing mechanisms into beacons of hope. Our mum’s life was invaluable, and her untimely passing should be the catalyst for change—real, palpable change that can save lives and improve millions of others.

We need your support to push local authorities to take responsibility and act immediately. By signing this petition, you are not only honouring the memory of our mum but also taking a stand for countless others who, like her, need and deserve much better from our mental health services.
