The Issue

Pensioners in South Africa built this country and contributed to its progress through their decades of hard work and dedication. Now, in their retirement years, they are facing an untenable situation where they cannot afford basic necessities such as food, medicine, or electricity. This is not the dignified future we want for those who have given so much.

The Old Age Grant, intended as a safety net for our elderly populace, currently falls short of covering the real costs that pensioners face. While the grants are linked to general inflation rates, they do not address the accelerating costs of critical essentials including healthcare, nutritious food, electricity, and transport. Pensioners are often forced into heart-wrenching decisions, sacrificing their health and nutrition just to make ends meet.

According to the South African government statistics, out of over 3.5 million pensioners, nearly half live below the poverty line. Increased costs in healthcare and food have risen by over 10% annually, far outpacing the increase of the Old Age Grant, which last saw a marginal upward adjustment of 4%. This discrepancy has created a chasm between pensioners’ needs and their financial realities.

It is time for decisive action. We call upon the South African Department of Social Development to reassess the Old Age Grant's current structure and formulate a revised plan that accurately reflects the living costs faced by pensioners. Steps must be taken to adjust the grant in accordance with the real price index and account for the unique vulnerabilities of the elderly population.

Furthermore, targeted support strategies must be implemented to offer ongoing assistance and education about secure investment options, ensuring pensioners can make financially sound decisions with their disbursements. The government owes it to those who have built this country to provide them with the security and dignity they deserve in their golden years.

Please sign this petition to support the call for a just increase in the Old Age Grant and advocate for the dignified treatment of South Africa’s pensioners. Together, we can ensure that our elders have a future filled with dignity and hope.
