Increase Social Assistance and Disability Benefits in Saskatchewan

Increase Social Assistance and Disability Benefits in Saskatchewan
The Issue
I am a recipient of the Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability (SAID) program, struggling to make ends meet on a monthly income of $1200. With rent consuming $1000, the remaining $200 is woefully inadequate to cover my bills, let alone other necessities.
This is not just my story; it's the reality for many people living under SAID and Saskatchewan Income Support (SIS). These programs are notorious for leaving recipients below the poverty line, struggling to afford food or pay their bills. It's unacceptable that we are left in such dire straits every month.
Moreover, current regulations penalize those who receive monetary gifts while on assistance - an unfair practice that further exacerbates our financial difficulties. This needs to change.
In 2019, over 15% of individuals in Saskatchewan lived below the poverty line. A significant portion of these were recipients of social assistance or disability benefits (source: Statistics Canada). This statistic underscores the urgent need for reform.
We call upon our local government representatives and policymakers to increase social assistance and disability benefits in Saskatchewan so they provide a reasonable income. We also urge them to revise regulations so that recipients aren't penalized for receiving monetary gifts.
